"To ONE DEGREE or another, the question of what to have for dinner as. sails every omnivore, and always has. When you can eat just about anything nature has to offer, deciding what you should eat will inevitably stir anxiety, especially when some of the potential foods on offer are liable to sicken or kill you". These two lines really stuck in my head throughout the reading because choosing what I will eat for a meal can sometimes cause anxiety. Also because you must be aware that some foods out there are liable to sicken or kill you. For example, one time my friend and I ordered from a Chinese place and the food got us both very sick. We of course were unaware of the danger as we were eating the food but a few hours later we were both throwing the food back up. Choosing were or what to eat is important. Also, some things may make one person sick but not make another person sick. I believe that I will now think of these lines every time I choose a place to eat. I will now think, is this the best choice? Will this make me sick? Could it possibly be bad for me?
"Yet we are also different from most of nature's other eaters markedly so. For one thing, we've acquired the ability to substantially modify the food chains we depend on, by means of such revolutionary technologies as cooking with: fire, hunting with tools, farming, and food preservation". These lines are something that I totally agree with. The art of cooking with open fire is something that I think made food better. I'm not much of a fan of things that aren't actually cooked. I will not eat sushi because it is raw or not cooked. I also am one that likes my food cooked a little more then usual. I like my steaks well done along with my burgers.
The next article I read in regards to food or eating is by Wendell Berry entitled, "The Pleasures of Eating." I especially like the title of this article because I thoroughly enjoy the act of eating. When I'm in a bad mood, I get myself some of my favorite food to cheer me up. When I'm happy and wish to celebrate something I go out to eat and celebrate.
"The pleasure of eating should be an extensive pleasure, not that of the mere gourmet." I really like this quote because I feel it expresses the joys of actually eating the meal and also the joy of the environment when eating with others. It says, "extensive pleasure" which to me means, to enjoy everything about the meal not just the taste of the food. When going out to eat or inviting people over for dinner, I enjoy the entire atmosphere of the scenery. I enjoy the company, the food, the setting, and sometimes even the music to go along with the setting or place.
I also like the line, "Learn the origins of the food you buy, and buy the food that is produced closest to your home". This is very true. I believe that everyone should try to buy food that is produced closest to their home. Everyone should buy produce from their local farm or at least buy food that is not imported into our country from else where is the world. I believe if everyone followed this rule our farmers wouldn't be in so much trouble these days. It is also very important to follow the origin of the food that you are consuming in your household. One shouldn't be afraid to ask their local grocery store where they are getting their produce from. If your grocer can't answer that question maybe you would be better getting your produce or food directly from a farmer and cutting out the grocer who isn't knowledgeable about their own product.
